One of the core features of the Studio One workflow is drag and drop - enabling users to work fast and spend more time making music. If you are new to Studio One, then these may be a revelation; if you're a Studio One maestro then you may know these already.

Here's 5 ways to use drag and drop in Studio One.

I cannot select a track that was dragged (ctrl +drag) into the mix. It was dragged into the same track as another and now I can only select the other track. I cannot change the volume or delete and it does not appear in the playlist.

  • In the Timeline, right-click the track you want to change to an Overlay track, and choose Overlay Track. Select the track in the Timeline. On the Tools menu, choose Overlay Track. To crop or extend an Overlay segment. If you extend an Overlay track beyond the end of the original sound file, it will loop back and play from the beginning.
  • You can use the overlay track to show videos and images on top of the main video track. Simply drag the clips from the main video track up onto the overlay track. Overlay clips are linked to a corresponding clip on the main video track. This way, they will stay in sync even of you move or cut the video clip.
  • Within the features of the video overlay tracks you should look for the ability to crop and re-size the overlay easily. Also a key feature that many miss until it is too late is that there must be the ability to add transitions to the overlay track as well as the main video track.
  • MixMeister Studio records all DJ’s actions and manipulations and allows them to be tweaked and altered to create the perfect studio mix. MixMeister Studio also offers expansion via connectivity with a wide range of MIDI hardware controllers, and when your mix is complete it can be exported as an MP3 or burned to a CD using the integrated.
  • Nov 29, 2017  Using MixMeister's mouse-wheel-controlled zoom feature, you can zoom out to view the entire mix or zoom in as close as one beat of a measure. When playing your mix, a vertical bar represents the current position of playback, allowing you to “read” the song as it plays. Each song is added linearly along the Timeline.

Create A New Instrument

The fastest way to add an instrument (or any plug-in or preset for that matter) is to go to the browser, search for the one you need, and just drag and drop it to the track. If you drag an instrument, Studio One creates the track and routes the audio. If it has multiple outputs, then it even takes care of that, too, should you wish to use them. Even better, if you change your mind about the VI you are using, simply drag a new one on the track to replace it.

Copy Plug-ins

If you've crafted a great effect in a plug-in and want to use it on another channel - such as vocals and guitars - simply drag the plug-in to the channel you want to use it on. Studio One intelligently copies the plug-in, with its settings, to the new track.

Create Automation

Creating automation in Studio One is a doddle; whenever you move a setting in a VI or effect in Studio One, the data relating to that setting appears in the black box on the top left of Studio One. Now, in many cases this will show a meaningful name; in some third party plug-ins, it may simply show a control number. Either way, whenever this is showing just reach up and grab the hand icon so it goes white and drag it to the channel where the instrument or effect is used. Now you have the automation lane - which you can use to automate that control.

Copy The Groove Of Another Track

Let's say you have a hot live drum part and you want the bass to have the same groove. It couldn't be simpler in Studio One. Hit the 'Q' button in the toolbar and then you'll see the Quantize toolbar appear below. To the left, there's an option to choose 'Grid' or 'Groove'; select 'Groove'.

Now drag the audio from the track that has the Groove you want to follow up to the window directly to the right of the Groove selector. Then, find the track (MIDI or Audio) to which you want to match the groove and hit the 'Apply' button. You may want to use the Bend settings first in order to modify how much of the groove is copied to the groove window, and also experiment with the intensity of the quantize to get exactly what you need. It does take some trial and error and, in most cases, you'll find subtle works best.

Convert Audio To MIDI

Using the same basic principles shown in the 'Copy Groove To Another Track' item above, you can also use this to copy the audio of another track and convert it to MIDI to trigger a new drum sound. There's a free video tutorial here showing you how to do it.

Summary

Drag and Drop is your friend in Studio One, so experiment by...well...dragging and dropping!
