  • That’s an indication of not enough resources (processing power/RAM). When you load a track to a deck in DEX 3 it buffers the entire track into RAM – normally, on a machine that meets/exceeds our system requirements and that’s in proper working order, it takes all of 3 seconds to fully buffer (but you can click play as soon as the track loads and it will not catch up to the ‘loading’ bit).

You may have too many songs in the cache for the amount of RAM you have on your machine, or the system doesn’t meet/exceed our requirements. What are you running for processor, amount of RAM, and graphics card? Approximately how many tracks total in your database?

Here’s what you need (minimum) to run DEX 3 efficiently (more songs you have, the more system RAM you’ll need):

    SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: WINDOWS
    Windows 7 / Windows 8 / Windows 8.1 / Windows 10
    2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / Core 2 Quad / Core i3/i5/i7 / Amd Phenon
    4 GIG RAM or Better
Video card: Intel HD 3000 Series Graphics Card or Better
    DirectX/ASIO compatible multichannel soundcard
200 MB free on the hard-drive

    SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: MAC
Mac: OSX 10.9 (Mavericks) or greater
    2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / Core 2 Quad / Core i3/i5/i7
    4 GIG RAM or Better
Video card: Intel HD 3000 Series Graphics Card or Better
    Multichannel Core Audio soundcard
200 MB free on the hard-drive

That’s apples to oranges – iTunes doesn’t buffer tracks entirely into RAM (no more than 20 seconds at a clip) and doesn’t have instant start, hot cues, loops, effects etc – our buffering/playback engine is a lot more advanced than consumer media players like iTunes. We definitely need RAM available for proper/quick buffering – since the tracks are taking so long to buffer into RAM, something must be impacting DEX 3’s ability to do so in a timely manner.

How many tracks total do you have in your library? 8GB of RAM will manage about 150,000-200,000 songs total in the cache. If you have more, you’ll need more RAM.

What is your processor? What’s the speed? What graphics card?

Please answer these questions as they will help to determine cause.. If you’re machine is equipped with a Celeron or AMD processor, or a processor under 2.5ghz, this may also be a big part of the issue.

If you’re machine does meet the specification requirements – it may not be performing properly or you have other applications running/eating up valuable resources. Here’s our optimization guide: https://www.pcdj.com/optimize-your-dj-computer-for-video-mixing/ The guide says it’s for ‘video mixing’ but it’s a generic guide for system optimization as well.

If you plan to use this machine for DJ purposes only (which would always be the recommendation) you could try re-installing windows fresh, installing/updating drivers for all hardware, and then re-install DEX 3 and see how things run. Keep things as bare bones as possible – not even antivirus.

We buffer the entire track into RAM – and also need breathing room. It’s the access to processing power and memory that impacts track loading time. However, after reviewing your specifications, I’m pretty sure this is due to the processor you’re running. The benchmark tests for the AMD A6-44M APU are very low – see this chart: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+A6-4400M+APU&id=29

Your CPU’s comes in even lower than the i5 2.2 ghz (which is below our minimum system requirement). The AMD processors just aren’t that great in general with many DJ software applications, including DEX 3. A couple of our competitors have stopped supporting them entirely. You really want to use an i5/i7 processor that’s at least 2.5ghz.

If you’re running the very latest VDJ8 version I’d be surprised if things run smoothly — but they may do some specific optimizations for slower CPU’s (and I doubt video would work very well at all). Older VDJ versions will likely run fine on a machine like that. We’re definitely using CPU threading, RAM, and your GPU in a very modern way.

Bottom line, I don’t think reloading will help, unfortunately.
