Try launching Live without any peripherals/devices plugged in and launching only the default set (or a set with no user-installed plugins). Also try another user account, it could be a user specific problem. The terminal suggestion is OK at best, I'd roll back the OS to Yosemite and wait for Ableton to release an update supporting El Capitan.

For those wondering, Ableton Live 8 works perfectly fine on OS X El Capitan (10.11). I am currently running Live 8.4.2 without any issues. View entire discussion (29 comments).
